...[more]Mission of Three Hots and A Cot - Provide services for homeless veterans while transitioning into affordable housing. This will include; lodging, meals, access to medical, dental, counseling, job placement, and other social services as needed by the participant. We also seek to identify and provide services to veterans who are in danger of becoming homeless. Program Details - Three Hots and A Cot will continue to do everything possible to meet the needs of our homeless veterans – meeting with Congressman and Senators, coordinating with the Department of Veterans Administration, cooperating with Social Workers and Homeless coordinator at Birmingham VA Hospital, attending Secretary Shinseki's Summit to end Homelessness in DC last year, attending Governors Institute Grant Training at the VA in Atlanta last year, and working with other homeless service providers in the Birmingham area. Some of what we at Three Hots and A Cot have done since forming: • We house every veteran we have room for whenever the VA calls from Birmingham. • We provide transportation to and from the VA Hospital to all program participants. • We have provided blankets and sleeping bags to nearly 200 homeless veterans on the streets of our community. • We have provided furniture to veterans as they move into HUD VASH housing. • We have provided work boots and work tools to veterans as they find jobs. • We provide meals to veterans as they stop by the house. • We have purchased gas for veterans in transit to jobs or back to families • We have provided groceries to veterans and veteran families in need. • We provide clothing to veterans as they come to the house. • We provide resume prep services to all veterans who come to our door. • We provide job interview skills training through at the house – to all veterans. • We provide family reconciliation counseling on a regular basis to non residents. • We help every veteran we can – as they present themselves to us – in any way we can – and we do this beyond just those in our house.
